National Network of Abortion Funds
National Network of Abortion Funds:
In 1993, 24 grassroots abortion Funds came together to create the National Network of Abortion Funds. It was formed in response to the thousands of women who sacrifice food, risk eviction, and pawn their possessions in order to raise money for an abortion. Some are forced to continue the pregnancy, abandon their education, and stay trapped in poverty. Women face these difficult situations because the government denies abortion funding to women in need. urgent problem. The National Network of Abortion Funds is a network of over 100 grassroots groups in more than 40 states that help women pay for abortion services and are continuing the fight for full public funding of abortion.
Every year, the fund collectively provides more than $3,000,000.00 to pay for the abortions of over 20,000 women.
They believe "the legal right to abortion is only meaningful when women have the resources to obtain abortion services." They also believe that "restrictions on abortion care and public funding for abortion are discriminatory because they especially burden poor women, women of color, young women, and rural women"—sectors of the population that the National Network of Abortion Funds would like to see have greater access to abortions.
The National Network of Abortion Funds proudly provides direct funding to "women in need." Their "National Reproductive Justice Fund complements the work of our member Funds across the country and provides funding to women in the second trimester, women in prison, immigrants, young women in crisis, and women for whom English is a second language." They are also concerned because "Congress also denies abortion coverage to many other women who rely on federal health plans: women in the U.S. military and Peace Corps, federal employees, disabled women, federal prisoners, Native American women covered by the Indian Health Service, and residents of the District of Columbia." * (emphasis ours)
EDITOR'S NOTE: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2006, 56.5% of the population of the District of Columbia was black — the national average is 12.8%.
