Abortion Support:
Abortion Support is not as widespread as many would like us to think. A recent national survey conducted at the behest of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) reports that about half of the adults in the United States support strong restrictions on abortion, while most support restrictions that are currently forbidden under current constitutional law.
Only 11% percent of those polled thought abortion should be illegal in all circumstances. 38% said they would limit legalized abortion to circumstances involving rape, incest, or danger to the mother's life.
33% would limit abortion to the first three to six months of pregnancy, and only 9% oppose all restrictions on abortion.
While less than one in ten Americans support legal abortion for any reason at any time during pregnancy, that is the current position of abortion law under Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decisions that made abortion legal throughout the nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason.
About 95% of the respondents favored laws requiring abortions be performed only by licensed physicians. 88% favored informed consent laws. 76% favored conscience protection laws for pro-life doctors and nurses, and 73% approved of parental involvement laws in cases where a minor is seeking to procure an abortion.
